Would you like to watch an episode of Murder, She Wrote with me from the comfort of your own sofa? Here’s your chance! Wherever you are in the world, join me for a watch party!
More details will follow - but for now, pop the date in your diary.
Kate Mulgrew is majestic as seriously wealthy Sonny Grier in this episode.
As she puts on a diamond-encrusted necklace that might define the term “bling,” she is told, “All eyes will be on you at the Royal Gala in London tomorrow evening Miss Grier.”
Her response? “Well, that's the whole idea; who says the Brits have the monopoly on the Crown Jewels?” Later she tells a plastic surgeon friend, “What's the sense of owning some gaudy little bauble if you can't show it off?”
The necklace is worth “two or three million” dollars, and naturally, there are several people who would like to get their mitts on it.
Kate's character is on the Champagne Supper Service to London, and Jessica is on that flight too. There is a scuffle in the VIP lounge before departure when a press photographer tries to get a shot of the society celebrity, and Jessica loses a couple of shrimp puffs in the melee.
Sonny apologises about the paparazzi saying, “With Madonna out of the country, somebody has to be shot.” Then Jessica gets into conversation with another traveller with the marvellous name of Errol Pogson (played by David Hemmings),
and she is quick to deduce that he's with Scotland Yard. They flirt a little, and he treats her to a sherry.
Jessica drinks white wine with her Dover sole on the flight,
so if you don't fancy pork, you could have a fish supper instead.
Sherry and shrimp puffs would be lovely to serve as an appetiser with either of these meals, especially if you have someone to flirt with.
Kate Mulgrew's Pork Tenderloin
1 x 5-pound pork tenderloin*
6 cloves garlic
1 cup seasoned flour (salt, pepper, paprika & oregano)
4 oz English orange marmalade
½ cup Cointreau or Sherry
Preheat oven to 350℉.
Crush one of the garlic cloves and rub this all over the tenderloin. Slice the remaining cloves into slivers. Dredge the meat lightly with the seasoned flour. Stud the tenderloin all over with the garlic slivers by inserting them into the flesh. Place on a rack in a roasting pan on the middle shelf of the oven and roast for 1 hour.
While roasting combine the marmalade and Cointreau or sherry in a bowl and mix together. After 1 hour, baste the tenderloin completely with this glaze mixture, turn the oven up to 400℉ and cook until the pork assumes a light crustiness (about 20 minutes). The pork is ready when it’s only slightly pink in the center.
Serves 4-6
Note - my test cook Kama was a bit shocked at the suggestion of a 5-pound pork tenderloin. She wrote, “First thing's first: this calls for a 5-pound pork tenderloin. What kind of mutant hogs is she getting? A tenderloin is 1-2 pounds!” So, proceed with caution with the rest of the ingredients amounts and scale them down to suit your pork.
