Imagine! One of The Snoop Sisters taught Jessica Fletcher English Literature!
Well, of course, I am mixing up my murder mystery series' here, but Mildred Natwick* is great as a teacher, much beloved by J.B. in this episode.
It's unclear how a former teacher got to be so rich,
but there sure is a lot of fighting over her will, as there is a lot of money at stake.
Muriel is on my “most wanted recipes” list, as alas, I have nothing for her in my collection. However, Dick Van Patten also appears in this episode, and his recipe is an easy but delicious way of preparing chicken. It's reasonably quick to rustle up, so it would be a lovely mid-week treat to accompany your viewing.
I would heartily recommend following a screening of Murder in the Electric Cathedral with an episode of The Snoop Sisters as a double bill. I adore this short-lived series; it's an absolute hoot!
* I have just realised that I spelt Mildred Natwick’s name incorrectly in the Murder, She Cooked book. I called her Muriel Nantwich! What on earth?! If you have a version of the book with this invented movie star name in it, you have a collector’s item…
Dick Van Patten's Lemon Chicken Casserole
1 egg, beaten
1½ teaspoons milk
⅛ teaspoon salt
Pinch of pepper
1 garlic clove, crushed
4 skinned, boneless chicken breast halves
Seasoned dry breadcrumbs
¼ cup olive oil
⅓ cup chicken broth
2 tablespoons dry white wine
1-2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
¼ cup Parmesan cheese, grated
Preheat oven to 350℉.
In a shallow dish, stir together the egg, milk, salt, pepper, and garlic. Pound the chicken breasts with a mallet or the side of a plate to flatten evenly. Dip the breasts into the egg mixture and then roll in the breadcrumbs to coat. In a large frying pan, heat the olive oil over a medium heat. Cook the chicken, turning once, until golden. Drain on paper towels.
Arrange the chicken in a 11x7x2-inch baking dish. In a small mixing bowl, combine the chicken broth, wine, and lemon juice. Pour over the chicken. Sprinkle with the cheese. Cover and bake for 25 minutes. Uncover and bake for 10 minutes more.

Mildred Natwick!! Love!
I adore Mildred Natwick. She deserved more recognition but I suspect she was an actors actor as they say. I wish she was in this episode for longer. It was lovely to see her and Angela together again after The Court Jester. What a shame Angela wasn't in the Snoop Sisters. And I wish they had both been in Columbo. What fabulous guest stars they would have been. I hadn't noticed that Mildred Natwicks name was wrong in your book. I was too busy drooling over the recipes 😆
