Jessica gets a big smacker right on the kisser when an old flame hits town.
The super dashing, blazer-sporting, seafaring David Everett (played by the brilliant Leslie Nielsen) rocks up and almost knocks her off her feet with his flirty ways.
But David will not be going on my matchmaking potentials list for J.B. Firstly; he helps himself to a bottle of champagne at her place,
then he puts on an apron and takes over in the kitchen.
He’s swiftly getting his feet under the table and even offers Sheriff Tupper some breakfast eggs.
The last straw is when he pinches a book from Cabot Cove library - imagine!
Jessica’s buddies are immediately suspicious of David
and don’t like him swanning around the place in his pyjamas and dressing gown.
Neither do I! Seth puts it perfectly when he tells Jess, “You are thinking with your funny bone and not with your head. This old friend of yours could turn out to be a cold-blooded killer!”
This is the first episode featuring the legendary Dr. Seth Hazlitt, notorious curmudgeon, and Jessica’s bosom buddy. I think he’s the first person we have heard call her Jess, so they are very close friends indeed. We don’t mind it at all when Seth wears an apron and rustles the pots and pans in J.B.s kitchen. Unlike David, he’s definitely allowed.
Although we will discover in later episodes that Seth is quite the cook,
it seems in real life William Windom may not have spent much time in the kitchen. The only recipe I have for him in my 8,000+ collection is this one for caviar and grits. A simple, but romantic dinner à deux, he suggests serving with a bottle of chilled champagne. Coincidentally, David mentions wining and dining his clients with caviar and champagne. Go on, treat yourself!
William Windom’s Caviar and Grits
1 cup grits
1 cup wild rice
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
4 teaspoons beluga caviar
Cook the grits and wild rice according to package instructions. In a serving bowl toss together the cooked grits, wild rice, butter, and caviar. Serve with a bottle of chilled champagne.
